Camp Beyond the Scars 2021!

Camp Beyond the Scars is going on this week! Follow along on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter for updates and to see all the amazing activities from our campers. So far campers have learned how to make balloon rockets, marshmallow pops, terrariums, pizza bagels, bug rocks, catapults, tik tok dances, yo-yo tricks, and more.

Once again local firefighters have stepped up to go above and beyond and help deliver Camp in a Box to local burn survivors! Thank you Chula Vista Fire, Escondido Fire,  Heartland Fire & Rescue, Lakeside Fire Protection, Oceanside Fire, San Diego Fire-Rescue, San Marcos Fire & Temecula Fire!

Burn Institute Programs Update

Fire Safe Seniors – In June the Santee Fire Department teamed up with the Burn Institute for a smoke alarm installation day! Firefighters and our Fire Safe Seniors team installed smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms at a local mobile home park to help keep seniors safe! Find out more information about our free program here.

Community Engagement: Wildfire Prevention – Throughout the pandemic the Burn Institute has continued to provide wildfire prevention information to our communities. Our staff and dedicated volunteers have taken part in the SDG&E Wildfire Safety Fair Drive-Thrus to pass out hundreds of wildfire guides to the more isolated parts of our community to to help families prepare their home and have a plan ready in case a wildfire threatens. These drive-thru events are a great way to make sure important wildfire preparedness information reaches more parts of our community.
You can find these guides online for FREE here in English and Spanish.

Burn Survivor Services – Our young adult retreat earlier this summer was a great success. Young women came together for a therapeutic day of activities and to talk about the difficulties and struggles they face as burn survivors. By finding a community of young women who have shared similar struggles, these survivors are also able to support one another and encourage each other on how to overcome barriers and continue to grow.

As it heats up this summer remember that the risk of burning your feet on hot pavement increases as the temperature rises. It can take only a matter of seconds to cause second-degree burns. Children, older adults, and pets are most at risk for pavement burns. Take preventative measures to keep everyone safe!
