Starting a Local Fire Safe Council

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Wildfire preparedness starts at the neighborhood level. Fire Safe Councils (FSCs) bring residents together to create defensible space, harden homes, improve evacuation readiness, and educate communities. Over 50 communities in San Diego County have created community FSCs, more than any other County in California, but some areas remain unserved.

What is a Fire Safe Council?

A Fire Safe Council is a community-based group of residents working alongside fire agencies to:

  • Identify local wildfire risks
  • Organize defensible space, home hardening, and fuels reduction projects
  • Educate neighbors about preparedness and evacuation

Fire Safe Councils are grassroots organizations led by neighborhood volunteers and supported by the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, CAL FIRE, San Diego County Fire, and other local fire agencies.
